Multidisciplinary focus to tackle big global challenges
Expertise in addressing complex human-natural systems is highly sought after today as we address big problems such as climate change, power grids, transportation systems, and global markets. Here, the Gallo School’s multidisciplinary focus on management, data science, and environmental sustainability will serve us very well.
Innovative and distinctive
The Gallo School proposes an innovative plan to advance knowledge within the disciplines of economics, cognitive science, philosophy, and management while simultaneously emphasizing distinctive integrative specialty areas around domains such as wildfire science & management, the economics of disparity, environmental entrepreneurship, information system, and policy design
Will promote multidisciplinary and equity centered approaches
Reading the proposal with a focus on issues pertaining to graduate division and specifically, graduate students’ welfare, it is clear that the proposed Gallo school will add exciting opportunities for graduate education at UC Merced. Among the many benefits that are bound to be derived from the creation of the school, I wish to highlight the potential of the Gallo School to provide a variety of new, expanded, and timely educational opportunities across a range of areas around related to the management of complex systems. The convergence of traditionally disparate fields of cognition, management, economics, business administration, and data science under one school is likely to lead to important benefits for training UC Merced graduate students in currently unique approaches that explicitly center interdisciplinarity and equity.

Well written and outlines a clear path for a new school
Fulfillment of donor promise is important
one of the clearest arguments advanced for the establishment of the Gallo School of Management is that a promise was made to a donor that has not been fulfilled, and fulfilling the promise will (a) give access to the funds, and (b) make clear to future donors that UC Merced is a reliable partner. We do not take these arguments lightly. The university is reliant on donors and needs to maintain our reputation with them. If a School of Management needs to be established for this reason only, that may even be enough. If so, it must happen in a manner that does not threaten the quality of the undergraduate education we offer by drawing already inadequate resources from the schools we have spent the last two decades working so hard to build.
Opportunities for innovative education and research in management
In the Gallo School future, I see excellent opportunities for innovative education and research in management, data science, service science, cognitive engineering, applied cognitive science, and cognitive science for the common good.
Interdisciplinary theme aligns with the campus priorities
Faculty-driven effort
this is a faculty driven effort, with faculty from three departments who have worked hard to craft a pre-proposal for the School that allows us to pursue a shared vision without interfering with the goals and self-determination of other departments on campus.
Might assist with achieving R1 status
